The Skin Barrier Breakdown: Why It Matters & How to Keep It Strong
A No-Fuss Guide from Clemence Organices
If you’ve ever dealt with dryness, irritation, or unexpected breakouts, chances are your skin barrier is crying out for help. This often-overlooked layer is the key to keeping your complexion balanced, hydrated, and resilient—but modern skincare habits (like overuse of actives or conflicting ingredients) can easily throw it off track.
We sat down with Bridget Carmady, founder of Clémence Organics, to get the lowdown on what compromises your skin barrier, how to spot the signs of damage, and the best ingredients to bring it back to life. Think less is more and nature knows best, and your skin will thank you for it.

What is our skin barrier, and why is it vital?
The skin barrier is composed of multi-cellular layers of skin (which contains oil glands and part of our immune system to name just a few parts), as well as a microbiome of non-pathogenic commensals (bacteria, viruses etc. that live on our skin). This protective barrier plays a crucial role in keeping essential elements inside the skin while shielding against external aggressors.
Which factors commonly compromise it?
Common things that we do to disrupt this barrier is cleansing (or moreso, over cleansing), using too many skincare products or cosmetics, and using products which kill essential bacteria in our microbiome.
How can we recognise a compromised barrier?
A compromised skin barrier often manifests as inflammation, such as dermatitis, but can also present as dryness, sensitivity, or acne.

What steps can we take to repair and support it?
The best way to repair a damaged skin barrier is by using natural and organic skincare products, as synthetic chemicals in skincare can often cause disruption. Limiting cleansing to once daily, preferably with a gentle cream or oil cleanser, helps maintain the barrier’s integrity and prevent further irritation. For a gentle clean, try our balanced, Refining Cleanser — it’s non-irritating and won’t strip the skin.
Which key ingredients are especially beneficial for barrier repair?
Key ingredients for barrier repair include natural oils like jojoba oil, which closely mimic the skin’s sebum, as well as protective waxes and butters such as shea butter and beeswax that create a temporary barrier. Additionally, anti-inflammatory botanicals like calendula help soothe and support skin healing.
How does Clémence Organic prioritise barrier health in its skincare approach?
Our products are designed to restore and support skin health, with every formulation working to strengthen the skin barrier. Made from 100% natural and certified organic ingredients, our products are incredibly gentle, making them suitable for all skin types. We advocate for a minimalist approach to skincare, such as cleansing just once a day, and provide education on how diet and lifestyle choices can enhance overall skin health.
