Stay Fresh This Summer with Step One
Underwear Tips for a Cooler, Comfier Summer
When the temperatures rise, comfort and breathability become a non-negotiable, especially when it comes to what’s underneath. From sticky commutes to long beach days, the right underwear can make all the difference in keeping you cool, dry and confident.
We spoke to Julia Lin at Step One for her tips on how to take the heat off with smart design, sustainable fabrics and a few insider hacks that make summer dressing a breeze.

What should women look for in underwear for the warmer seasons?
When the weather warms up, comfort and breathability become key. Look for underwear that feels light on the skin, allows for airflow, and wicks away moisture to help you stay fresh throughout the day. Fabrics made from natural or plant-based fibres are ideal, as they help regulate body temperature and prevent that sticky, uncomfortable feeling. Our bamboo viscose fabric is a great example as it is naturally breathable, soft, and thermoregulating, making it perfect for summer wear.
Which fabrics should women avoid in hot weather and why?
Synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon tend to trap heat and moisture against the skin, creating a breeding ground for irritation and discomfort. These materials do not allow your body to breathe the way natural fibres do. During summer, it is best to avoid anything that feels plasticky or non-porous. Opt instead for lightweight, breathable fabrics such as bamboo viscose, which helps moisture evaporate quickly and keeps you feeling dry and cool all day.
Are there differences between underwear suited for everyday wear and active summer days?
Absolutely. Everyday underwear should prioritise softness and breathability for long-term comfort, while active days call for a bit more support and moisture control. Think of it as choosing between your favourite linen dress and your go-to workout set, each serves a purpose. Bamboo viscose offers versatility across both, as it is naturally moisture-wicking and temperature-regulating, so whether you are on a beach walk or running errands, you stay comfortable without needing to change styles.
How can women tell if their underwear is “breathable” before buying?
A simple rule of thumb is to check the fabric composition. Natural and plant-derived fibres such as bamboo viscose or cotton are inherently more breathable than synthetics. If the product description mentions moisture-wicking, thermoregulating, or anti-bacterial properties, those are good signs too. You can also do a quick touch test, as breathable fabrics tend to feel softer, smoother, and cooler to the touch. Step One’s bamboo viscose, for example, has a silky finish that is lightweight yet supportive, giving you that fresh, barely-there feel even in peak heat.
