Murad is the Pro-Grade Skincare You’ve Been Sleeping On
It’s dermatologist-developed skincare for breakouts, hydration and ageing.
It can get pretty frustrating dealing with breakouts at an age when you’re also shopping for retinol. Surely we could have finished one chapter before starting the next? Yet here we are, trying to find skincare that understands the assignment.
Enter Murad. Founded in 1989 by dermatologist Dr Howard Murad, the brand has spent decades developing targeted skincare with a focus on hydration and skin health. Its range covers everything from pigmentation and blemishes to barrier support and fine lines. If you’ve spotted the name but never quite made it to checkout, there’s something for everyone within the range.
If you’re looking to dip your toe into science-backed, dermatologist-developed skincare, Murad has your checklist covered. Three recent additions make a good introduction, covering the everyday cleanse, skin navigating hormonal changes and a fresh take on one of the brand’s best-known retinol formulas. Read on for our top picks.

For: Skin that would appreciate a little calm
Breakouts, excess shine and dehydration make for quite a conflicting skincare brief. Luckily, the Biome-Balancing Calm & Recover Cream ($80, 50ml) is designed with exactly that combination in mind, including the changing needs of skin around (the *dreaded*) perimenopause.
The lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturiser helps manage excess oil while hydrating and soothing skin. GABA, an antioxidant amino acid, supports smoother, healthier-looking skin, while tranexamic acid and niacinamide help improve the appearance of those dark marks that like to outstay the breakout itself.
There’s also Murad’s Biome-Sensing Technology, designed to help rebalance the skin microbiome. It’s a considered approach to skin that needs help with blemishes, but still wants moisture and comfort. A little less drama for your face, which feels like a reasonable request, right?

For: Giving your retinol a refresh
Forget the retinol from the supermarket shelf collecting dust on your vanity. The reformulated Retinol Youth Renewal Serum ($156, 30ml) brings Murad’s 4x Active Retinoid Technology to its established favourite, and it’s about to give you the glow up you need.
How so, you might ask? Through a combination of encapsulated retinol, fast-acting retinol, a stabilised retinoid with omega-6 and a soothing bio-retinoid booster. The formula targets visible concerns including fine lines, uneven tone and rough texture, with ingredients chosen to help offset potential irritation.
Four types of hyaluronic acid and collagen amino acids round things out, keeping hydration in the picture. Because smoother-looking skin is appealing; a face that feels desperately thirsty is considerably less so.
According to the clinical results published by Murad, the serum improved 10 visible signs of early skin ageing after seven days in a four-week study involving 30 participants. Consider us interested. It’s a powerful, scientifically-backed formula, and the attention to hydration adds to its appeal if you’re considering a change to your evening skincare routine.

For: Taking the day off
Taking your makeup off is rarely the most exciting part of your night, but the Lipid-Enriched Double Cleansing Balm ($65, 50ml) makes a good case for getting it done (and such a fun experience too!)
Designed to remove makeup, SPF and daily buildup in a single cleanse, it combines fermented camellia oil with gentle cleansing glycolipids and barrier-supporting lipids. The aim is to leave skin clean, soft and comfortable, with particular consideration for dryness and changing hormonal skin needs.
Massage it onto dry skin, add water to create a milky emulsion, then rinse. The twist-up packaging really levels up the ritual, and it’s extra friendly for your travel bag. And despite “double cleansing” being in the name, Murad says there’s no need for a second cleanse. One less step between you and bed? Yep, we’ll take it.
