Your guide to the Best Underwear for Spring with Nala

Nala's Co-founder Chloe de Winter on the best fabrics to wear for the warmer seasons.

With Spring in full force and the weather getting warmer by the day, we asked Nala‘s co-founder Chloe de Winter on the best fabrics and styles of underwear to invest in for the upcoming Spring & Summer months.

Chloe explains “When considering your underwear options, breathability is key. Especially as the weather gets warmer, it’s imperative that the fabrics you choose breath well, every gyno will agree. Nala’s Better Than Cotton range is made from a luscious modale derived from beech trees. It’s soft, yummy and incredibly breathable. That means it’s perfect for everyday wear.”

1. What to look for when choosing breathable underwear

When it comes to breathable underwear, natural fibres are your best bet. Fabrics like modal, cotton, and bamboo are fantastic because they allow air to circulate and help keep you cool. Pay special attention to the gusset area (that smaller piece of fabric that sits under the vulva), as it’s crucial for moisture-wicking and breathability. The gusset should ideally be made from a natural fibre-like modal to promote airflow and reduce the risk of irritation. Remember, breathable underwear isn’t just about comfort – it’s about maintaining your overall health and hygiene.

2. What to avoid when choosing underwear materials

When choosing underwear, it’s important to avoid fast-fashion options that lack quality and care. Look for underwear made with breathable materials, especially in the gusset area that comes into direct contact with your skin. While nylon is a fantastic fabric for underwear due to its durability, stretch, and smooth feel, it’s important for the gusset area to have natural fibres like cotton for breathability and temperature regulation. This is why we ensure our Bio Butter and Flossy Mesh ranges are crafted with breathable cotton gussets designed to promote airflow while keeping you feeling HOT AF (and dry down under!) all day long.

3. Why is it important to wear underwear that is breathable

Every gyno would agree that breathable underwear is super important for maintaining vaginal health. Nobody wants to get hot and sweaty down there! Breathable fabrics help to wick away moisture and allow air to circulate, reducing the risk of irritation, infection, and unpleasant odours. Wearing the right underwear can make a huge difference in your comfort and confidence throughout the day. Plus, it keeps things feeling fresh, which is a win-win for everyone!

4. Do you need to consider the size of underwear that you’re choosing (e.g., g-string or high-waisted)?

When it comes to choosing the size or style of your underwear, such as a g-string or high-waisted briefs, it’s really about personal preference. As long as you choose good quality, breathable fabrics, the shape shouldn’t matter too much. Most importantly, you feel comfortable and supported in whatever style you choose. Whether you love the barely-there feel of a g-string or the full coverage of high-waisted briefs, just make sure the fabric is breathable and fits your body shape well to avoid any discomfort or irritation.

5. How does modal prevent moist and sweaty environments + what makes BTC the best option for breathability?

Modal is a bio-based fabric made from beech trees, known for its softness and breathability. It’s natural, biodegradable, and a fabulous fabric for wicking moisture away from the skin. The weave of modal makes it incredibly breathable, allowing air to circulate and helping to keep you dry and comfortable.

We knew we could find the perfect fabric for optimum breathability, and our Better Than Cotton range ticks all the boxes. You get all the benefits of a super breathable fabric that feels amazing against the skin and keeps you fresh all day. Plus, Modal uses 20 times less water than cotton, so we really are proving that sustainability can also be sexy and comfy!
